It is not difficult to understand why Burgundy is such an exciting wine area.  The place has real character.  Indeed, when walking through the old streets of Beaune, its vinous capital, you can feel the history.  In addition, unlike in Bordeaux where you rarely meet the people who own the famous estates, in Burgundy a lot of the best producers live near by their winery and spend a lot of time working in it.   Regarding the wines, they speak for themselves.  The best white wines are stunning with great complexity and displaying fabulous aromas of stony fruit, citrus fruit, dried flowers, dried fruit and honey.  It is true that the red wines can sometimes be infuriating by their inconsistency, but nowadays that is much less the case and, at their best, they are sublime with beautiful aromas of strawberry, raspberry and black cherry, but also some spicy flavours and with a bit of bottle age, some wonderful gamey undertones!  Furthermore, they have a delicious silky feel on the palate!

Tonight, Master of Wine, Richard Lashbrook, a Director of Thorman Hunt, importer of fine wines, will guide us through a range of superb Burgundy wines that he knows well through his regular purchasing visits to the wineries.
