We are a small, award winning hotel, opened five years ago and located in the beautiful New Forest National Park.
My husband, Gerard Basset, was the co founder of the original Hotel du Vin Group and I was the AA’s youngest ever hotel inspector. We have teamed up to create a small hotel with a distinct personality. After purchasing the property in early 2007, we spent months renovating it before its opening in September that year. The hotel is fast becoming known and was named as one of the world’s top new hotels in Conde Nast Traveller’s 12th Annual ‘Hot List’.
Now two years old, the hotel has evolved hugely and changed considerably since those first early days. Much comment has been made regarding our interiors, the look and feel of the hotel and the fact that it feels like the forest has “come inside” and the hotel has been featured greatly in the National press and many glossy magazines. (articles as enclosed) There have also been two TV shows where we, the hotel and our forest location have been featured.
Gerard and his first-class wine knowledge is obviously a huge draw for visitors and this has been picked up in the press attracting new visitors. Gerard’s expertise is a valuable tool in the PR campaign in securing coverage. In addition the small touches that have been installed such as the small Hotel TerraVina branded rubber ducks in the guest bathrooms (who guests are told are welcome to ‘swim home with them’) and the now famous leather dog doorstops and designer stripe dog stops and associated TerraVina branded products are extremely popular and help keep Hotel TerraVina front of mind with past guests.
At Hotel TerraVina we try to recognize every guest as an individual. Each of the 11 bedrooms is individual in its design, and service is personalized to the needs of every guest. We feel first impressions count, and all who come through the door are made to feel welcome. We personally take a hands-on approach to management, as does Suzi, our general manager and are usually present to answer guests’ questions about the hotel, the surrounding area, and of course, the wine.
Gerard’s expert knowledge of wine and previous involvement with Hotel du Vin has enabled him to mentor a series of young sommeliers, many of whom are now highly respected and qualified themselves. He has invested the same time in his staff at TerraVina on the premise that the more passionate and knowledgeable the team are, the better service will be provided to the guests. The hotel invests much time and effort and finances in training staff and ensuring they remain motivated. Almost every guest who stays at the hotel mentions the staff’s professionalism and their friendliness and our guest comment book is a testament to them all as the comments included in there are hugely positive. We are immensely proud of Suzi and our small team of staff, almost all of whom have been with us since the very beginning.
We have won numerous awards, including the Conde Nast 65 Hottest Newly Opened Hotels in the World (2008) along with Best Small Hotel 2009 for South East Tourism award for ExSEllence. We have also won a César Award from the Good Hotel Guide for 2009, for Best Hotel Newcomer and have been rated the top restaurant in South East of England in the Hardens Restaurant Guide in conjunction with Remy Martin for 2009.
Although we are only a small hotel we are much talked about, very well loved by a huge number of returning guests and the hotel keenly promotes wine as one of its unique selling points, as my husband is currently the only person in the world to hold the titles of Master of Wine, Master Sommelier and Wine MBA all at once. Coupled with that the fact that we love the New Forest and are passionate about what we do and where we live and work.
