Many will know Beaulieu for the National Motor Museum and the famous Beaulieu Autojumble. However, there’s far more to this historic destination including Beaulieu Abbey and the Palace House and beautiful gardens. It’s a great day out for everyone.
For three hundred years, Beaulieu Abbey, founded by King John in 1204, was the largest Cistercian monastery in England. As with many ancient monasteries, much of it was destroyed on the instructions of Henry VIII during the Reformation. However, there is still plenty to see and it’s easy to imagine what it must have been like all those centuries ago.
The Palace House, home to the Montagu family, was created in 1538 from the Great Gatehouse of Beaulieu Abbey. There’s much to see in this magnificent house including family treasures of the Montagus. You’ll also see the Secret Army Exhibition; the Palace House was used by Special Operations Executive (SOE) during the Second World War as a training base for secret agents. There’s a good film to watch about how the ‘Finishing School’ operated for four years in complete secrecy.
The National Motor Museum, of course, is the finest display of histories vehicles in the country. There are record breaking vehicles and customised vehicles, and a 1930s street scene. In total, there are about 250 vehicles on display, some dating back to the 1890s.
If cars are not your thing, then the gardens are well worth a visit. There’s the fragrant Victorian flower garden, the wilderness garden which can be traced back to the late 18th century and the kitchen garden which is on the site of the original Palace House kitchen garden.
