Did you know that Lord Nelson’s favourite ship, the Agamemnon was built at Buckler’s Hard? She saw action at the Battle of Trafalgar as did two other ships that were also built here, the Swiftsure and the Euryalus.
Buckler’s Hard became a famous shipbuilding village because of its position on the Beaulieu River and its proximity to the New Forest. This was when England’s maritime supremacy was at its height during the 18th and 19th centuries. Demand for timber naval vessels was heavy and Buckler’s Hard was ideally located.
The village was originally built by the 2nd Duke of Montagu who wanted to make money out of the sugar plantations of the West Indies by importing sugar into England via Buckler’s Hard. However, the French got in the way by seizing the islands and the Duke was never able to realize the opportunity.
Now this beautifully preserved 18th century village with its maritime history in the New Forest National Park is a delight to visit. There’s a maritime museum so you learn all about the village’s history. You can also take a boat trip on the river but the riverbank walks might give you just as much pleasure.
