Broadlands in Hampshire, home of Lord Louis Mountbatten and a monument to Capability Brown.
Broadlands, one of the finest of grand English houses, is conveniently located near Hotel TerraVina and the New Forest. Owned by the Viscounts Palmerston and later the Mountbattens, the house has played a major role in the achievements of Great Britain and has played host to royalty and many of the most influencial people of the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries.
It was Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown who transformed the Tudor and Jacobean manor house to what can be seen today. However, the east front portico and Domed Hall were added by Henry Holland the younger.
The River Test, one of the finest trout rivers in Europe, flows through the estate and it was Capability Brown who recognized the potential of the river and the grounds to create what is regarded by many as his greatest masterpiece.
Broadlands is simply breathtaking and is well worth a visit, if only for a visit to the Mountbatten Exhibition in the stable building or one of the many events that take place there during the year.
