Last year it was with trepidation that I visited the local primary school by invitation, to give a talk to a large number of Year 6 children on the delights of being a hotelier (see my original blog from June 2010)
I say with trepidation, as so many of my friends looked alarmed last time, when I mentioned that I had been invited and as the day grew nearer for my talk I admit to becoming a little more nervous. The last year’s talk was a success, so much so that I was invited back this year and so off I went to meet the “new” Year 6 pupils. I was less nervous this 2nd visit as I felt like I was an “old hand” this time…. just as before I was greeted at the door, escorted into the main hall by two adorable children who had the most perfect and beautiful manners and then the next half hour sped by in a whirl as a sea of hands were raised and questions were asked from all corners of the room.
I was genuinely surprised that so many of the children had heard of Fawlty Towers… maybe I’m not as old as I thought I was and also how many children watch Alex Polizzi on the Hotel Inspector show.
The children were all delightful, insightful and I was surprised at the quality of questions and interest they showed. It was a fun filled session and I greatly enjoyed my time with them all…… the lovely thing with working with children is their spontaneity, their enthusiasm and their interest- Had I arrived a tad tired and jaded, I left the school with a spring in my step and a smile for the warmth of welcome I had enjoyed, the interest I received and the fun I had with the kids.
Many thanks once again Bartley Junior School for inviting me- I am extremely impressed by the school as a whole, the children and teachers in Year 6 and the happy atmosphere that abounds.
Keep your eyes peeled this week for the next snippet of life at TerraVina with the 3rd episode of TerraVina TV, which spot lights the kitchen and a few of the team.
