It is of course very difficult to give gifts to people who have everything and I always think that men are trickier than women to buy presents for….. thus since Gerard’s fantastic win at the Sommelier World Championships last year, I had been thinking of what congratulatory gift to give him…….well after a year of behind the scenes preparation and with the help of a number of great supporters who endorsed the nomination (huge thanks to them all) and the amazing hard work of Charlotte Heath Bullock- I couldn’t have done it without her, the secret is out! My congratulations “gift” to Gerard, my very special, very talented and (only sometimes infuriating) husband was to nominate him for an honour from the Queen and on Saturday 11th June, I was the proudest wife in town, when in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List it was announced that Gerard had indeed been awarded an OBE, for services to the Hospitality Industry.
Whilst I know I am biased, I think Gerard truly deserved such an accolade and I am thrilled that it has been bestowed upon him…. But what has been heart warming and indeed overwhelming is the warmth and huge number of congratulations that we have received since Saturday. There have been hundreds of e mails, tweets, Facebook messages, text messages and phone calls- flowers have arrived and messages from every corner of the globe and so it is with great pride and an incredible sense of just how loved Gerard is that I realize that his gift has turned out to be so much more than the honour of an OBE, but also the strongest indication, (if any were needed) of just what a special, well loved and enormously respected man Gerard is.
Bravo Gerard and believe me when I say, I am so going to have fun shopping for the outfit, the shoes, hat and handbag for the trip to the Palace!
Very many congratulations from Romané and I- we love you very much and are sooooo proud of you. I will have to practice how to curtsey now!
Thank you again to everyone who has sent their congratulations. We have been very touched and greatly appreciate so many kind words.
Till next week
