The holidays are over, I have used up my “time off for good behaviour” and enjoyed my usual month away during July and August and have returned to the fold and our loyal, hardworking, committed and brilliant team, who with Charlotte at the helm, have kept TerraVina busy and thriving through the summer and in fact have done a much better job without me being here!
It has been a momentous summer for all sorts of reasons, no less that it is the year that we celebrated 8 years of ownership of the hotel, and despite many hiccups, challenges and also a few difficult times along the way, we are still here and still working with brilliant young people, mentoring, nurturing and guiding them onto bigger and better careers with both hospitality and beyond. Whilst mentioning young people, please forgive the family connection, but I must mention our son, Romané, who has made us extremely proud parents producing a truly magnificent set of GCSE results; well-done Romy- you are a star!
As some of you know, we bade farewell to Tanguy, our Head Sommelier and his charming wife, Caroline. After Tanguy’s UK Sommelier of the Year win, he felt that London was the next choice for him and so he has left us to take Laura Rhys’s role, (Laura having been our previous Head Sommelier who trained Tanguy when he was her assistant, here at TerraVina), as Head Sommelier at La Trompette, Chiswick. We wish both Tanguy and Caroline much luck in their new London life and adventures and will watch their careers progress with pride. Christophe and Nicola have also moved to London and so Gerard and Alwine, our newly promoted Head Sommelier and previously Tanguy’s assistant, are shaping a new team of wine protégés and no doubt you will meet them soon on your next visits to TerraVina.
The new, fused glass art work in the hotel reception and bar/restaurant areas is proving to be enormously popular and returning guests are amazed at the new look and the difference the changes have made- the whole hotel feels fresh, airy and bright and we love the new image. We had a great “Meet the Artist” event in August and we are thrilled to be working with Sue Tinkler, of Tinklertastic, the enormously talented glass artist, who lives locally in Winchester and who has been brave enough, (I’m not very creative or artistic!) to invite me to one of her glass fusing courses to see how she creates such masterpieces and even have a go myself…..watch this space!
Thus all in all a busy month or so, hence the reason there has been no blog for a little while- I have recharged my batteries, touched base with my familiar and favourite summer destinations of Minorca and Norfolk, (I know an intriguing mix) and seen Gerard only briefly as we have passed each other with suitcases in hand, as he travelled to California, Portland and Seattle and then to Hong Kong- it’s the secret of a happy partnership and marriage- we are rarely together, so can rarely argue and when we are together we appreciate each other all the more….. that’s the theory anyway, although the team may well tell you something different!
Happy back to school and work and here’s to balmy September days and maybe even an Indian summer
Until next time- thank you for being patient and awaiting the return of the blog; it’s nice to be back
