"So this is what HDV founder and super-sommelier Gerard Basset and his front-of-house specialist wife Nina did next. An upper mid-market hotel with an accent on good, affordable food and wine, with a modern feel. Sound familiar?
….as sequels go, this is definitely more Godfather II than Police Academy VIII"

"TerraVina fills a yawning void in the restaurant offer in and around Southampton (it’s just five minutes out of the city by car). Nowhere else around here served food this good in such a relaxed environment. Surely it can only be a matter of time before it wins a Michelin Star."

"...HDV's founder, Gerard Basset,...has just returned to the front desk with Hotel TerraVina in a delicately dappled corner of The New Forest..."

“Everyone in the industry knows about Gerard Basset. He is probably the most knowledgeable and qualified sommelier in the UK (we’re talking Master Sommelier, Master of Wine, wine MBA). He is also, in 1994, one of the founding partners of the phenomenally successful and trend-setting Hotel du Vin group.
...Given the Bassets’ hands-on philosophy, it’s no surprise to find them both very much in evidence at Hotel TerraVina. In fact, the personal touch of their presence is one of the defining things about the hotel.”

“….All this expertise and the experience of Du Vin are refined in the champagne of a boutique hotel on the edge of the New Forest.
I let Laura Rhys, the Head Sommelier, choose the wine and she suggested wines that were being test-tasted that day and not on the wine list. It’s nice to get such spontaneity and confidence with wine service.
One of the best hotels I’ve reviewed in the past eight years”

“When you find out that a new hotel on the edge of the New Forest is the brainchild of Hotel du Vin group co-founder, Gerard Basset and his wife Nina, you know it won’t be run of the mill - it isn’t.”

“By George they’ve pulled it off again; Hotel TerraVina could be an exciting new addition to the country hotel scene.”
“If anyone qualifies as the sommelier’s sommelier, it’s Gerard Basset, past winner of the Best Sommelier of Europe, author of a terrific book on wine tasting, and co-founder of the Hotel du Vin chain. Hotel TerraVina is his latest venture, a gem just inside the New Forest. The comfortable, attractive restaurant has a wall of glass doors onto a wide deck overlooking lawns, and an open kitchen. The menu is concise, but nicely mixed, as in a lasagna of leek and Cornish crab, with a rich sauce of the brown meat, or a plaice fillet enlivened with pickled cucumber and shallot puree; mains included John Dory fillets on a tomato and grilled leek tart on a film of pesto sauce, and pot roasted chicken with pea puree and garlic gnocchi.”

“As Nina became an AA hotel inspector at the tender age of 21, you can expect, and you get, the best in terms of equipment and service – at extremely reasonable prices. Many of the rooms, with walk-in showers and separate roll-top baths, have secluded patios or terraces, some huge.
The wine and the food have the same ability to impress and I’m sure that certain je ne sais quoi which only a Frenchman can bring will soon follow.”

“Gerard Basset MW, well known to most in the wine trade and one of the founders of the Hotel du Vin chain. He’s spent his money from the sale of this group well: TerraVina is in a similar format, but with a more modern edge, in the heart of the New Forest.”

“...The foodie couple at the next table were, like me, raving about the pot roast chicken with leeks and gnocchi. They told me they lived in London and spent weekends on the Isle of Wight. They were enjoying their meal so much that they now planned to stop at TerraVina for supper each time they drove down…” “In our very comfortable bedroom, the ‘wow’ factor came from the roll top bath at the end of the bed and the enormous sun-trap roof terrace with two sun loungers, (seven of the rooms have either a garden or a roof terrace). Smaller details ticked the right boxes too; a supremely comfortable bed, proper hangers and an ironing board in the wardrobe, an espresso machine and real milk in the fridge instead of horrid UHT cartons. Locally made lavender smellies added an unusual touch and my chap was thrilled to discover 60 channels on the flat TV, many of them sport…”
