Southampton has been an important town and port since medieval times. Parts of the medieval walls are still there and the medieval town gates are one of the finest examples in the country. It was in Southampton in 1554 that Philip of Spain heard Mass before marrying Queen Mary in Winchester. It was from Southampton that the Pilgrim Fathers set off for the new world in 1620. However, their ships, the Mayflowers and the Speedwell, had to call in at Plymouth before crossing the Atlantic.
The city is still a famous port that nowadays it owes its fame to cruise ships. The boom in cruising has seen a substantial increase in the number of these huge, majestic liners entering and leaving Southampton, whence they sail to the four corners of the earth. People travel from all over the country to embark on a cruise.
Southampton is a thoroughly modern city and a regional centre for the arts. The theatres attract some of the biggest names in show business and the art galleries rank amongst the best outside London.
