Did you know that Winchester was once the capital of England when Alfred the Great was King; Winchester was his seat. This is a beautiful cathedral city that successfully combines history and modernity to the benefit of both.
Building of the cathedral was started in 1079 and you can still see the remnants of the original Norman architecture. Parts of Winchester Castle still survive in the Great Hall and the Sally Port. The former was one of the finest in the land, is certainly the finest to have survived and is still home, after 600 years, to the great round table.
The city is a delight to visit. There is so much to see and do. There’s excellent shopping, some very fine restaurants, internationally renowned opera, the Winchester Writers’ Conference, the cathedral and so much more.
Where better to stay if you’re visiting Winchester and the New Forest than the luxury boutique hotel near Winchester, Hotel TerraVina.
