A taste of Western Australia with Plantagenet Winery!
Four courses dinner £75 pp

Based in the Great Southern area of Western Australia, Plantagenet is a winery that has been getting a lot of good press. James Halliday the most well known and respected Australian wine critic gives Plantagenet a five out five star rating in his latest guide. Amongst others, the winery produces a fabulous Riesling, a delicious Chardonnay, a rich Pinot Noir and both their Cabernet Sauvignon and the Shiraz are consistently rated among the top 20 in Australia. In fact, the Shiraz 2003 won a gold medal at the 2006 Decanter World Wine Awards. In addition, Plantagenet has just released a new wine called the ‘Lioness’ a blend of Viognier and Shiraz showing great depth and a lovely fragrance. Thanks to Liberty wines, this evening Tony Cloke European Brand Manager for Plantagenet will comment the selection of wines he has specially chosen for us.

A flavour of New South Wales with the wines of Chalkers Crossing with wine maker Celine Rousseau

The Chalkers Crossing vineyard and winery are in the Hilltops region in the Australian State of New South Wales. Wonderful Riesling, Semillon, Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon wines are produced. In addition, the winery also makes some delicate Chardonnay, Sauvignon and Pinot Noir wines from grapes grown in the Tumbarumba area, also in New South Wales. Tonight, we are privileged to have with us Celine Rousseau, the wine maker at Chalkers Crossing and winner of the 2002 Quantas Young Australian Winemaker of the Year. Celine will take us through a selection of superb Chalkers Crossing wines during dinner.

Residential Wine Weekend with a Chateauneuf du Pape Wine Master Class on Friday and a relaxing day on Saturday
The cost of the weekend is £650 per couple and that will include:
- The two nights accommodation
- Breakfast for the Saturday and Sunday mornings
- The Friday Supper and the Saturday three course dinner
- The wines for the aperitif, tasting and supper on the Friday evening

Historically Chateauneuf du Pape is a very important wine producing region.  Indeed, it is in Chateauneuf du Pape that the foundation for the French Wine Appellation system was born.  In 1923 Baron Le Roy of Chateau Fortia set up some rules to both delimitate the area of Chateauneuf du Pape and govern the production of its wines in order to protect its producers against fraud and adulteration by competitors from other French wine production areas.  In 1935 when the French authorities created the Appellation of Origin Scheme the regulations were greatly based on those existing already in Chateauneuf du Pape.

However more importantly than past history, Chateauneuf du Pape wines have gained rave reviews and won a lot of prestigious awards in recent years.  In his seminal book ‘The world’s Greatest Wine Estates’ published in 2005, Robert Parker, the most influential wine critic in the world, lists and reviews only 156 wine estates but sixteen of them are Chateauneuf du Pape producers!  The powerful US magazine ‘The Wine Spectator’ regularly gives some of the leading Chateauneuf du Pape estates top marks (in the 90’s + out of 100) for some of their best cuvées.  In fact in its December 2007 issue it is a Chateauneuf du Pape wine that won the highly coveted title of ‘The Wine Spectator Wine of the Year’ beating a considerable number of the most prestigious wines from all over the world.  It is not the first time that it has happened, twice before in the last twenty years a Chateauneuf du Pape wine has scooped this incredible honour.  This great attention has pushed both the demand and prices for the wines of this area. 

Even though a small amount of white wine is made, Chateauneuf du Pape is principally a red wine appellation.  The best wines have wonderful ethereal flavours coupled with a rich and smooth texture.  They are generous wines that can age extremely well.  In addition, they go beautifully with red meat and many hearty dishes.

In England the Chateauneuf du Pape name is well known but perhaps and surprisingly not always that well understood.  Therefore this Chateauneuf du Pape Master Class is the perfect opportunity to taste 6 stunning examples.  Gerard will comment on these wines and will lecture on the main aspects of this famous wine area.  The session will be preceded by an aperitif and during the two course supper another superb wine from Chateauneuf du Pape will be served for your enjoyment.

It is not surprising that Champagne Pol Roger is so popular with wine journalists. Unlike many famous champagne brands, Pol Roger is still a family owned house and the family as well as their MD are genuinely lovely people. However, more importantly the champagne is absolutely delicious. Tonight, we have with us Master of Wine James Simpson of Pol Roger UK to take us through some of their wonderful Champagne including the top cuvée ‘Sir Winston Churchill’. Incidentally, in his Cambridge days, James was captain of the winning team in the Cambridge v Oxford Blind Tasting Match.

Being the 13th of July, the day before Bastille Day, it seems appropriate to put on a French wine dinner. With a bit of luck the weather should be good so what better than an evening with some refreshing wines from the Loire Valley. Tonight, Douglas Harrison MD of Harrison Vintners and Gerald Beaumont Director of Domaine de La Paleine will present the delicious wines of the Saumur Appellations. So for those who like a dry white wine with waxy/appley flavours and crisp acidity, red wines with plenty of berry aromas coupled with a lively and juicy texture and a luscious dessert that is not cloying, then the evening is for you!

Laura Rhys graduated from Uwic (Cardiff) University in 2004 with a BA ‘Honours’ in International Hospitality Management. After a short work experience in Italy, she joined the Hotel du Vin Winchester in October 2004 as Commis Sommelier. She was quickly promoted to Assistant to the Head Sommelier (then Claire Thevenot the UK Sommelier of Year 2006). She left Hotel du Vin Winchester in May 2007 to become Head Sommelier at Hotel TerraVina. Laura started four weeks before Hotel TerraVina opened for the public and therefore she has experienced the difficulties, excitement and the joy that an opening brings. Tonight, Laura will present the wines that she has selected to compliment a menu she has designed with Rory our Head Chef.

In just a few years, Austrian wines, and in particular the delicious wines made with the Gruner Veltliner grape variety, have become the darlings of the sommeliers in the top restaurants of London and New York. It is not surprising as these wines of great character present truly exciting aromas and a beautiful mouth feel. In addition, they are wonderful partners to so many different types of dishes. Lance Foyster, Director of his own wine company Clark-Foyster, is a Master of Wine and one of the leading UK experts in the wines of Austria. Lance will take us through some delicious examples of Austrian wines (including two Gruner Veltliners) from different part of this beautiful country.

When it comes to wine, the Rhone Valley is divided into two distinct areas, the smaller North and the much larger South. Both areas produce delicious wines but they are quite different in style. In general, the wines of the Rhone Valley are well known in England but they do not always receive the credit that their quality deserves. This is fortunate as this means that we can still find some delicious wines at relatively affordable prices; especially from Appellations such as Vacqueyras or Gigondas. Tonight, Master of Wine Richard Lashbrook, a Director of Thorman Hunt importer of fine wines, will guide us through dinner a range of superb Rhone wines that he knows well through his regular visits to the wineries.

Every wine lover knows that Germany produces some truly exciting white wines. Indeed German Rieslings have so many wonderful attributes. They display some of the most incredible flavours, wonderful texture and they can age as well as many red wines. However, German is not just about Riesling wines! In fact the country is now making a name, amongst others, for its superb Pinot Noirs. Tonight, Iris Ellmann, one of the leading UK wine merchant for German wines, will comment on some of her favourites German wines. Iris is the founder and the MD of the Wine Barn (Winner of the Best German wine merchant at International Wine Challenge 2007).

Our wine dinners take place in our Rutherford Bench private room. The lay out of the room is made of three large tables accommodating a maximum of 12 people each. On that basis, small parties, couples or single guests will be seated together to form a table of 12.

There is a special offer for those attending the wine dinner of £100 per bedroom (including Full English breakfast) for that Sunday evening.
